Reflections on Conference - Successes, Lessons Learned, and Room for Growth

Wednesday, November 1, 2017
The 2017 WSCA Annual Conference and Tradeshow was held last weekend at the Hilton Seattle Airport and Conference Center. With over 200 attendees and two (very) long days of programming, there was a lot to take in; but the event was ultimately a success, providing an entire year’s worth of CE credits to dozens of DCs, and nearly a year’s worth to the rest.

This year’s event was different than others in a number of ways. From our brand new CE-integrated tradeshow to the resounding success of our premium membership drive, we have a lot to report!

First, we experimented with a new feature—the CE-integrated Tradeshow.  WSCA members have asked for years to be able to earn CE credit for attending tradeshows. Although mere attendance wouldn’t necessarily seem to be an educational experience, this tradeshow involved a little more and took some detailed preparation. Exhibitors had to apply to offer CE credit, and in doing so, had to provide a qualified presenter, an approved topic, offer an unbiased educational presentation, and meet certain time requirements. Applications were scoured, revisions were requested, and in the end only 2/3 of the applicants were approved. But the result was a value-added experience that helped many DCs pick up over six hours of CE in a fun, interactive manner, and one that also improved the exhibitors’ experience.

Another new feature this year was the (near) elimination of paper. Attendees still received registration packets with sponsor materials and CE forms, but the session notes were provided entirely in electronic format. Available through both the mobile app and the conference flash drives (provided courtesy of The John Alexander Law Firm), attendees saved space, environmental resources, and—most importantly—money by ditching the cumbersome paper notes we’ve printed in years past. In the end, the WSCA printed out over 30,000 fewer sheets of paper for this event than it did the previous year. That savings goes directly back into the attendees’ pockets!

The third highlight we can point out from this event is the resounding success we saw with our premium membership drive. Special offers, coupled with an in-depth presentation at Saturday’s awards luncheon resulted in the WSCA almost doubling its number of premium members. As this program grows, more and more DCs are reaping the benefits of our carefully tailored membership enhancement with even greater discounts, greater visibility, and business growth opportunities.

Finally, the Washington State Chiropractic Trust is pleased to report that its lunchtime fundraiser, emceed by Richard Adler, exceeded its goal of raising $30,000 to support its 2018 legislative endeavors. Not only did the Trust exceed its goal, but they were bolstered by a generous contribution of $5,000 from luncheon sponsor Adler Giersch.

There is even more to report on the success of WSCA17—so much that we’ll have to report it in the next edition of Plexus, due to hit your mailboxes next month. In the meantime, mark your calendars now for the next WSCA Annual Conference & Tradeshow, which will take place October 19-20, 2018 at the Hilton Bellevue.
